Arkansas 2022 Election Results

November 8, 2022

Arkansas held its general election on November 8, 2022, deciding 135 legislative seats and 7 statewide offices led by the governorship. No chamber changed party control.

Highlights

  • Arkansas Republicans kept every statewide office and widened their legislative majorities, but voters turned down all 4 statewide ballot questions, including recreational marijuana and a bid to make future ballot initiatives harder to pass.
  • Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R) became Arkansas' first female governor, beating Christopher Jones (D) by about 28 points. She is also the first child of a former governor to win the office; her father, Mike Huckabee, held it from 1996 to 2007.
  • Below the governor, Republicans swept the statewide offices, with several officeholders trading jobs. Attorney General Leslie Rutledge (R) moved to lieutenant governor and Lt. Gov. Tim Griffin (R) to attorney general, while Treasurer Dennis Milligan (R) won the auditor's office and state Rep. Mark Lowery (R) succeeded him as treasurer. Secretary of State John Thurston (R) was re-elected.
  • Republicans finished with 82 of 100 House seats and 29 of 35 Senate seats. Of the 135 legislative races, 58 had only one candidate on the ballot, and the lone incumbent to lose in November was Rep. David Fielding (D), whom Wade Andrews (R) unseated by about 9 points in House District 98. The closest race was a Democratic hold, with Rep. Steve Magie (D) keeping House District 56 by about 10 votes over Trent Minner (R); he was certified for a sixth term.
  • Only one of the failed measures came close:
    • Issue 3, a religious-freedom amendment, failed by under 1 point.
    • Issue 4, the recreational marijuana amendment backed by the medical cannabis industry, suffered a resounding defeat, losing by about 13 points.
    • Issue 2, a proposal to require 60% approval for future ballot initiatives, lost by about 18 points.
    • Issue 1, which would have let the Legislature call itself into special session, lost by about 22 points.

Legislature

  • House (100 seats): 22 D, 78 R before the election, 18 D, 82 R after; control stayed with Republicans.
  • Senate (35 seats): 7 D, 27 R, 1 other or vacant before the election, 6 D, 29 R after; control stayed with Republicans.
