Hawaii held its general election on November 4, 2014, deciding 64 legislative seats and 2 statewide offices led by the governorship. No chamber changed party control.
Highlights
- Democrats kept the governorship and both chambers. Republicans gained one House seat on election night, but House Minority Leader Aaron Ling Johanson left the GOP to join Democrats in December, leaving just seven Republicans in the 51-member House.
- David Ige (D), who had pulled off a stunning upset of Gov. Neil Abercrombie in the August primary, beat former Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona (R) by about 12 points. Mufi Hannemann (I), running on the Hawaii Independent Party line, finished third with about 12 percent. Lt. Gov. Shan Tsutsui (D) kept his post.
- The only legislative seat to change party was House District 43, where Andria Tupola (R) unseated Karen Awana (D) by about 15 points, leaving the House at 43-8 on election night; otherwise, incumbents largely returned to office. The Senate stayed 24-1.
- Voters approved 3 of the 5 constitutional amendments: Amendment 1, requiring public release of judicial nominees' names, and Amendments 2 and 5, authorizing revenue bonds for agriculture and dams. They rejected Amendment 4, the year's most contested measure, which would have let the state contract with private preschools, and Amendment 3, which would have raised judges' mandatory retirement age from 70 to 80.
Legislature
- House (51 seats): 44 D, 7 R before the election, 44 D, 7 R after; control stayed with Democrats.
- Senate (25 seats): 24 D, 1 R before the election, 24 D, 1 R after; control stayed with Democrats.
