Hawaii held its general election on November 8, 2022, deciding 76 legislative seats and 2 statewide offices led by the governorship. No chamber changed party control.
Highlights
- Democrats kept the governorship and lopsided majorities in both chambers, but Republicans unseated 4 Democratic incumbents on Oahu, growing a caucus that remains a small minority in each chamber.
- Lt. Gov. Josh Green (D) defeated former Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona (R) by about 26 points, handing Aiona his third loss in a run for governor. Both men made housing costs the center of the campaign. Sylvia Luke (D), Green's running mate, became lieutenant governor.
- Republicans grew their House caucus from four to six of 51 seats with four newcomers. Three unseated Democrats in Ewa, Kapolei, and Makakilo, two of them members who had been arrested in drunken driving cases, and a fourth took an open Democratic seat, while two Republicans did not return:
- David Alcos (R) beat Rep. Matt LoPresti (D), who had represented Ewa and Ewa Beach for six years, by about 17 points in HD-41.
- Diamond Garcia (R) beat Rep. Sharon Har (D), a House member since 2007, by about six points in Kapolei's HD-42.
- Kanani Souza (R) beat Rep. Stacelynn Kehaulani Eli (D) by about 11 points in Makakilo's HD-43.
- Elijah Pierick (R) beat former teachers union president Corey Rosenlee (D) by about 700 votes in HD-39, which takes in Royal Kunia and Waipahu.
- Minority Leader Val Okimoto (R) left the House to run for the Honolulu City Council, and Rose Martinez (D) won the Ewa Beach seat Republican Bob McDermott had vacated, HD-40, by about three points.
- The Senate moved to 23-2. Former TV news anchor Brenton Awa (R) came from behind to unseat Sen. Gil Riviere (D) by about 400 votes in SD-23, which covers Kunia, the North Shore, and part of Windward Oahu. Sen. Maile Shimabukuro (D) held SD-22 over Samantha DeCorte (R) by 40 votes, a lead that held once cured ballots were counted.
- Across the 76 legislative races, 1 race outside the flips finished inside two points, and a single candidate appeared in 13.
