Indiana held its general election on November 8, 2022, deciding 125 legislative seats and 3 statewide offices. No chamber changed party control.
Highlights
- Republicans kept the two-thirds supermajorities they have held since 2010 in the Senate and since 2012 in the House, which take away Democrats' bargaining chip of denying a quorum. Both chambers' Republican leaders kept their posts, though Senate President Pro Tem Rodric Bray had to fend off a challenge from Sen. Mark Messmer.
- Redistricting moved one Democratic Senate seat, and one Democratic senator lost. The new map eliminated an Anderson seat held by a Democrat and created one in downtown Indianapolis, which Andrea Hunley (D) won easily in Senate District 46. In Senate District 1, Dan Dernulc (R) unseated Sen. Michael Griffin (D) by about 5 points.
- In the House, Democrats came out one seat ahead:
- Kyle Pierce (R) unseated Rep. Terri Austin (D), a 20-year Statehouse veteran, by about 2 points in Anderson's House District 36.
- Kyle Miller (D) won a new Fort Wayne seat in House District 82.
- Victoria Garcia Wilburn (D) took House District 32, left open when Republican Rep. Tony Cook retired, by about 250 votes over Fred Glynn (R).
- Dave Hall (R) edged Penny Githens (D) by fewer than 100 votes in House District 62, a result a recount confirmed in December.
- Republicans held all 3 statewide offices. Diego Morales (R) won the secretary of state's office with about 54% over Destiny Scott Wells (D), with Libertarian Jeff Maurer (L) near 6%. Wells attacked him as one of many Republican 2020 'election deniers', and in the campaign's final days records raised questions about where he voted in 2018. Daniel Elliott (R) won the open treasurer's race, and Auditor Tera Klutz (R) was re-elected.
- Griffin and Austin were the only incumbents to lose, and 4 legislative seats changed party in all, two each way. Beyond the flips, 3 House races finished within two points, Hall's among them, with Democratic Reps. Rita Fleming (D) and Mitch Gore (D) holding on in District 71 and District 89. In 50 legislative races, one major party fielded no candidate. Indiana had no statewide ballot measures.
