Kentucky held its general election on November 3, 2020, deciding 119 legislative seats. No chamber changed party control.
Highlights
- Republicans widened control of both chambers, and because this Legislature would draw the post-2020-census maps, the GOP would run redistricting for the first time in state history. The bigger margins mattered more for the Legislature's push to curb the executive powers of Gov. Andy Beshear (D) during the pandemic than for vetoes, since a simple majority of each chamber can already override him.
- Every one of the 15 seats that changed party went from Democrats to Republicans, including open seats such as Senate District 7, where Adrienne Southworth (R) beat Joe Graviss (D). Democrats lost 7 incumbents, more than House Minority Leader Joni Jenkins said the party was prepared to lose:
- Elsewhere, 40 seats had no candidate from one of the two major parties.
- Voters split the 2 constitutional amendments. Amendment 1, the crime victims' rights measure known as Marsy's Law, passed. It was a reprise of a 2018 amendment the Kentucky Supreme Court voided over vague ballot wording. Amendment 2, which would have lengthened the terms of district judges and commonwealth's attorneys, failed.
Legislature
- House (100 seats): 38 D, 61 R, 1 other or vacant before the election, 25 D, 75 R after; control stayed with Republicans.
- Senate (38 seats): 9 D, 29 R before the election, 8 D, 30 R after; control stayed with Republicans.
