Missouri held its general election on November 8, 2022, deciding 180 legislative seats and the office of Auditor. No chamber changed party control.
Highlights
- Republicans kept two-thirds supermajorities in both chambers and took the auditor's office, completing a sweep of statewide offices. Democrats still had their best House night in years, reaching their highest seat count in a decade.
- This was the first election on new House lines drawn by a bipartisan commission that created more competitive seats around Kansas City, Columbia, and Springfield. House Democrats also credited the abortion fight, after Missouri became the first state to enact a ban following the Supreme Court's Dobbs decision.
- State Treasurer Scott Fitzpatrick (R) beat Alan Green (D) by about 22 points for the open auditor's seat. Nicole Galloway, the last Democrat in statewide office, did not seek reelection.
- Both incumbent defeats were close, Allen's by 49 votes and Hein's by about 200, and 3 other House races also finished inside two points: Kemp Strickler (D) won House District 34 by 45 votes, Adam Schwadron (R) held House District 105 by about 100, and Philip Oehlerking (R) won House District 100 by about 180. More than half the legislative races, 92 in all, had only one candidate on the ballot.
- Voters passed 3 of 5 statewide measures. Amendment 3 legalized recreational marijuana, with expungement for certain offenses, four years after voters approved medical use. Amendment 4 lets the Legislature require Kansas City to spend more on its police department, the only one under state control in Missouri, and Amendment 5 created a state Department of the National Guard. Voters rejected Amendment 1, which would have widened the treasurer's investment authority, and the question calling a constitutional convention.
