New Hampshire 2016 Election Results

November 8, 2016

New Hampshire held its general election on November 8, 2016, deciding 424 legislative seats across 228 districts and the office of Governor. No chamber changed party control.

Highlights

  • Republicans kept the House, the Senate, and the Executive Council and won the open governor's office, controlling all four for the first time in more than a decade.
  • Chris Sununu (R) beat Colin Van Ostern (D), a fellow executive councilor, by about 2 points to succeed Gov. Maggie Hassan (D), who ran for the U.S. Senate. At 42, Sununu became the nation's youngest governor; his father, John H. Sununu, held the office in the 1980s. He said he would focus on the opioid crisis, energy policy, and reducing business regulations, taxes, and fees.
  • The Senate stayed 14-10 Republican after one seat moved each way. In District 7, Harold French (R) unseated Andrew J. Hosmer (D) by 17 votes after a recount; Hosmer, the only incumbent senator to lose, held off conceding over a ballot discrepancy in Laconia. Democrats answered in District 16, where Scott McGilvray (D) won the open seat over Joe Duarte (R) by about 2 points.
  • Across both chambers, 42 legislative seats changed party, about two to one in Democrats' favor, trimming the GOP's House majority from 239-160-1 to 226-174. In all, 21 incumbents lost; beyond those, 24 races were decided by less than two points, and 27 legislative races had only one candidate on the ballot.

Legislature

  • House (400 seats): 160 D, 239 R, 1 other or vacant before the election, 175 D, 225 R after; control stayed with Republicans.
  • Senate (24 seats): 10 D, 14 R before the election, 10 D, 14 R after; control stayed with Republicans.
