New Hampshire 2024 Election Results

November 5, 2024

New Hampshire held its general election on November 5, 2024, deciding 424 legislative seats across 227 districts and the office of Governor. No chamber changed party control.

Highlights

  • Former U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R) beat former Manchester Mayor Joyce Craig (D) for the open governorship by about ten points, and Republicans strengthened both majorities behind her, to a 16-8 Senate supermajority and a 222-178 House, up from the near-tie of the last two years.
  • The two Senate pickups both came at the expense of sitting Democrats. Victoria Sullivan (R) unseated Senate Minority Leader Donna Soucy (D) in Manchester's Senate District 18 by about three points, and Rep. Tim McGough (R) beat Sen. Shannon Chandley (D) in Senate District 11 by about two. Republicans held all 14 of their own seats, and the five-member Executive Council, which approves contracts and nominations, stayed 4-1 Republican.
  • In the 400-member House, Republicans widened a near-tie into a 222-178 majority. The Boston Globe counted nine House recounts afterward, none of which could have changed control; the first, in the Hillsborough 17 House district, confirmed a Democratic hold by 36 votes. One newly re-elected Republican, Rep. Aidan Ankarberg, left the party to sit as an independent before the December organizing session. Across the 227 legislative races, 30 finished inside two points and 25 drew no more candidates than seats.
  • The one ballot question, raising the mandatory judicial retirement age from 70 to 75, failed: it drew about 66 percent, just under the two-thirds a constitutional amendment needs.

Legislature

  • House (400 seats): 198 D, 201 R, 1 other or vacant before the election, 170 D, 213 R, 17 other or vacant after; control stayed with Republicans.
  • Senate (24 seats): 10 D, 14 R before the election, 8 D, 16 R after; control stayed with Republicans.
