New Jersey held its general election on November 4, 2025, deciding 81 legislative seats across 41 districts and 2 statewide offices led by the governorship, including 1 special election. No chamber changed party control.
Highlights
- Democrats won a third straight term in the governor's office, a streak New Jersey voters had not given either party since the 1960s. They also grew their Assembly majority to 57-23, past two-thirds and the largest since the 1973 Watergate landslide.
- U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D), a former Navy helicopter pilot, beat Jack Ciattarelli (R) by about 14 points in a race that turned ugly at times. It was Ciattarelli's second run as the Republican nominee; in 2021 he had come within about 3 points. Sherrill's running mate, Dale Caldwell (D), became lieutenant governor. Sherrill tied Ciattarelli to Trump, who had endorsed him in May. She leaned into electricity bills that had risen faster than almost anywhere else, promising to declare a state of emergency on utility hikes and freeze rate increases. She also won back ground Republicans had gained in 2024, carrying Passaic County by 15 points a year after Trump won it.
- All 5 Assembly seats that changed hands went from Republicans to Democrats, and each one ousted a Republican incumbent:
- Vinnie Kearney (D) and Andrew Macurdy (D) took both seats in District 21 from Michele Matsikoudis (R) and Nancy Muñoz (R).
- In District 8, Anthony Angelozzi (D) unseated Michael Torrissi Jr. (R), who finished about 3,800 votes short of the second seat; Assemblywoman Andrea Katz (D) was re-elected.
- District 2 split. Don Guardian (R) topped the field, and Maureen Rowan (D) took the second seat. She finished about 870 votes ahead of Guardian's running mate, Claire Swift (R), and fewer than 200 ahead of her own running mate, Joanne Famularo (D).
- District 25 also split. Marisa Sweeney (D) topped the field and unseated Christian Barranco (R), who finished fewer than 1,000 votes behind his running mate, Aura Dunn (R), for the second seat.
