Tennessee 2018 Election Results

November 6, 2018

Tennessee held its general election on November 6, 2018, deciding 116 legislative seats and the office of Governor. No chamber changed party control.

Highlights

  • Republicans kept the governor's office and lopsided majorities in both chambers; Democrats' gains in the Legislature amounted to a net of one House seat.
  • Businessman Bill Lee (R), a political novice running for the open seat of outgoing Gov. Bill Haslam, beat former Nashville Mayor Karl Dean (D) by about 21 points. Haslam noted it was the first time since 1867 that Tennessee had elected Republican governors back to back.
  • Democrats took two House seats from Republicans and lost one, and each party won the seat the other's House leader gave up to run for governor:
  • The Senate's partisan split did not change. Its closest race was in Memphis, where Sen. Brian Kelsey (R) held Senate District 31 against St. Jude researcher Gabby Salinas (D) by under 2 points. Lt. Gov. Randy McNally's political action committee spent $300,000 on attack ads against Salinas.
  • The three House seats above were the only ones to change parties, Smith was the only incumbent to lose, and 27 races drew a single candidate. Tennessee had no statewide ballot measures in 2018.

Legislature

  • House (99 seats): 25 D, 70 R, 4 other or vacant before the election, 26 D, 72 R, 1 other or vacant after; control stayed with Republicans.
  • Senate (33 seats): 4 D, 27 R, 2 other or vacant before the election, 5 D, 28 R after; control stayed with Republicans.
