Utah held its general election on November 8, 2016, deciding 90 legislative seats and 5 statewide offices led by the governorship. No chamber changed party control.
Highlights Republicans kept their trifecta and two-thirds supermajorities in both chambers; Democrats netted a single House seat, leaving Republicans ahead 62-13, and the Senate stayed at 24-5. Gov. Gary Herbert (R) won a final term , beating Mike Weinholtz (D) by about 38 points. Weinholtz, who put $2.5 million of his own money into the race, backed a modest income tax increase for schools that Herbert said would stall economic growth. Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox (R) was elected on Herbert's ticket, and the other three Republican statewide incumbents also won easily. Democrats picked up two Salt Lake County House seats and lost one in the Price area: Beyond the flips, three House Republicans held on narrowly. Rep. LaVar Christensen (R) kept House District 32 over Suzanne Harrison (D) by a handful of votes, and a county recount upheld his win . Rep. Craig Hall (R) won House District 33 by about 120 votes, and Rep. Bruce R. Cutler (R) won House District 44 by about 280 votes. Voters approved 2 of 3 constitutional amendments: Amendment A , on the oath of office, and Amendment B , on school fund distributions. They rejected Amendment C , which would have allowed property tax exemptions for equipment and other personal property leased by governments.
Legislature House (75 seats): 12 D, 63 R before the election, 13 D, 62 R after; control stayed with Republicans.Senate (29 seats): 5 D, 24 R before the election, 5 D, 24 R after; control stayed with Republicans.
