Utah held its general election on November 8, 2022, deciding 90 legislative seats and the office of Treasurer. No chamber changed party control.
Highlights Republicans widened their House supermajority , unseating two Salt Lake Valley Democrats on the new maps, while the Senate's partisan balance did not change. Both flips were razor-thin. Quinn Kotter (R) unseated Rep. Elizabeth Weight (D) by about 130 votes in House District 26 , and Anthony Loubet (R) beat Rep. Clare Collard (D) by fewer than 70 votes next door in House District 27 . Loubet credited the new boundaries with adding conservative-leaning areas, while Collard faulted a Legislature that she said ignored the independent redistricting commission voters approved in 2018. Trevor Lee (R), who took the Republican nomination from longtime Rep. Steve Handy (R), won House District 16 with just under half the vote; Handy, running as a write-in , finished second with about 35%. In September the Salt Lake Tribune had tied Lee to a secret Twitter account that attacked LGBTQ people and Gov. Spencer Cox, drawing a rebuke from House GOP leaders.Democrats left much of the map uncontested: of the 90 legislative races, 32 had only one candidate on the ballot, nearly all of them Republicans. Voters rejected Constitutional Amendment A by a wide margin. The legislative referral would have raised the limit on what lawmakers can appropriate in an emergency session and exempted federal emergency funds and spending cuts from that cap.
Legislature House (75 seats): 17 D, 58 R before the election, 14 D, 61 R after; control stayed with Republicans.Senate (29 seats): 6 D, 23 R before the election, 6 D, 23 R after; control stayed with Republicans.
