Vermont 2024 Election Results

November 5, 2024

Vermont held its general election on November 5, 2024, deciding 180 legislative seats across 125 districts and 6 statewide offices led by the governorship. No chamber changed party control.

Highlights

  • Vermont Republicans rode Gov. Phil Scott's (R) affordability message to break the Democratic supermajorities in both chambers, ending the veto-override majorities that had reversed a dozen of his vetoes over the previous two sessions. Scott himself was re-elected with roughly three-quarters of the vote. Democrats still hold both chambers, but every bill now has to survive a governor whose veto can stick.
  • The wave reached the House's committee leadership: Appropriations chair Diane Lanpher (D) finished third in a four-way race for Addison-3's two House seats, and Government Operations chair Mike McCarthy (D) lost Franklin-3 to Joe Luneau (R). The Senate lost a chair as well: Natural Resources and Energy chair Christopher Bray (D) finished third for the two Addison seats, about 650 votes behind Steven Heffernan (R).
  • The lieutenant governor's race produced the night's constitutional oddity. John Rodgers (R), who spent 16 years in the Legislature as a Democrat, edged incumbent David Zuckerman (PRG, the Progressive Party) but fell short of 50 percent, and under the Vermont Constitution a race without a majority winner goes to the General Assembly. Zuckerman briefly floated asking the Democratic majority to return him to office before conceding the point, and lawmakers elected Rodgers 158-18 in a January joint assembly, completing the only statewide party change of the cycle.
  • Below the top of the ticket, voters split their ballots: even as Scott and Rodgers won, the rest of the Democratic statewide slate held comfortably, with Treasurer Mike Pieciak (D), Attorney General Charity Clark (D), Secretary of State Sarah Copeland Hanzas (D), and Auditor Doug Hoffer (D) each re-elected by double-digit margins.
  • More sitting legislators lost re-election here than in any other state this cycle: seventeen, thirteen of them in the House. Counting Lt. Gov. Zuckerman, eighteen incumbents fell in all. Republicans netted nineteen House seats and six Senate seats; nearly every seat that changed hands was a Republican pickup from the Democrats. Of the 125 races, 33 drew only a single candidate.

Legislature

  • House (150 seats): 104 D, 38 R, 8 other or vacant before the election, 92 D, 57 R, 1 other or vacant after; control stayed with Democrats.
  • Senate (30 seats): 22 D, 7 R, 1 other or vacant before the election, 17 D, 13 R after; control stayed with Democrats.
