Virginia held its general election on November 2, 2021, deciding 100 legislative seats and 3 statewide offices led by the governorship. Control shifted: the House of Delegates moved from a 55-45 Democratic majority to a 52-48 Republican majority. The Senate was not up for regular election this cycle.
Highlights
- Republicans swept all three statewide offices and the House of Delegates, ending the Democratic trifecta. Democrats' 21-19 Senate majority became the main check on the new governor.
- Glenn Youngkin (R), a former private equity CEO and first-time candidate, beat former Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) by about 2 points, giving Republicans their first statewide win since 2009. Youngkin closed on schools and parental control, and parents who wanted more say in schools broke for him in exit polls. He also kept his distance from Donald Trump, skipping a telephone rally the former president held for him on election eve.
- Winsome Earle-Sears (R) became the first woman elected lieutenant governor and the first Black woman to hold statewide office in Virginia, beating Hala Ayala (D) by about 2 points. Jason Miyares (R) became the first Latino attorney general, unseating Mark Herring (D) by less than a point and denying him a third term.
- Republicans flipped 7 House seats, one more than the six they needed, and every flip unseated a Democratic incumbent. Jason Ballard (R), for one, beat Del. Chris Hurst (D) in House District 12. Two flips went to recounts, and reversing both would have left the chamber tied 50-50:The new majority elected Todd Gilbert speaker. Beyond the flips, 2 Democratic incumbents held on by less than two points: Kelly Convirs-Fowler (D) in House District 21 and Wendy Gooditis (D) in House District 10.
Legislature
- House of Delegates (100 seats): 55 D, 45 R before the election, 48 D, 52 R after; control moved from Democrats to Republicans.
- Senate (40 seats): 21 D, 19 R before the election, 21 D, 19 R after; control stayed with Democrats.
