Washington 2022 Election Results

November 8, 2022

Washington held its general election on November 8, 2022, deciding 122 legislative seats and the office of Secretary of State. No chamber changed party control.

Highlights

  • Democrats tightened their grip on the Legislature. Republicans had hoped to gain ground on dissatisfaction with President Biden, high gas prices, and crime, but hit a blue wall: Democratic incumbents won every legislative race they entered, even in the swing districts the GOP had targeted.
  • Democrats picked up a Senate seat in Whatcom County, where Rep. Sharon Shewmake (D) unseated Sen. Simon Sefzik (R) by about 900 votes in the 42nd District. Sefzik had been appointed in January 2022 after the death of longtime GOP Sen. Doug Ericksen. With Rep. Alicia Rule (D) and Joe Timmons (D) also winning the district's House seats, Democrats swept the 42nd for the first time in more than 30 years. Sefzik blamed the Supreme Court's abortion ruling and suburban growth; Senate Republican leader John Braun said Trump is "deeply unpopular in suburban districts".
  • Democrats picked up a House seat in the 10th District, where Clyde Shavers (D) defeated Rep. Greg Gilday (R) by about 200 votes after a machine recount, despite late charges that he had embellished his military record. In the 26th District, Sen. Emily Randall (D) held off Rep. Jesse L. Young (R) by under 2 points, while Spencer Hutchins (R) kept Young's House seat in GOP hands by about 700 votes.
  • In the only statewide race, appointed Secretary of State Steve Hobbs (D) defeated Pierce County Auditor Julie Anderson, who ran as a nonpartisan, becoming the first non-Republican elected to the office since 1960.
  • In both advisory votes, voters chose repeal: of the aircraft fuel tax increase in Advisory Vote 39 and of the tax on ride-hailing companies in Advisory Vote 40.

Legislature

  • House (98 seats): 57 D, 41 R before the election, 58 D, 40 R after; control stayed with Democrats.
  • Senate (49 seats): 29 D, 20 R before the election, 29 D, 20 R after; control stayed with Democrats.
