West Virginia 2020 Election Results

West Virginia held its general election on November 3, 2020, deciding 101 legislative seats across 84 districts and 6 statewide offices led by the governorship. No chamber changed party control.

Highlights

• Republicans turned their majorities into supermajorities, taking at least two-thirds of both chambers. It was the last election under multi-member House districts: under a 2018 districting law, the new Legislature would redraw the House into single-member districts.
• In the House of Delegates, Republicans posted their largest net gain since taking the chamber in 2014. Democrats lost ten sitting delegates. In Greenbrier County's District 42, Jeff Campbell (D) and Cindy Lavender-Bowe (D) both fell, to Barry Bruce (R) and Todd Longanacre (R). In District 65, Sammi Brown (D) lost to Wayne Clark (R) by about 125 votes. Even Monongalia County's five-member District 51 gave Republicans a seat, as former Del. Joe Statler (R) knocked out Del. Rodney Pyles (D). Republicans also swept every seat in Harrison County's four-member District 48 and won two of three in Marion County's District 50. One of the new Republicans, Derrick Evans (R) of District 19, resigned in January 2021 after entering the U.S. Capitol with the mob on January 6.
• In the Senate, Republicans flipped three Democratic seats. Sen. Doug Facemire (D), in office since 2009, lost to Del. Patrick Martin (R) by about 14 points in Senate District 12. Rupie Phillips (R) and Eric Nelson (R) picked up the open District 7 and District 17 seats, both left by retiring Democrats.
• Gov. Jim Justice (R), who first won as a Democrat in 2016 before switching parties, won a second term over Ben Salango (D) by about 33 points. The only statewide office to change hands was treasurer: Riley Moore (R) beat John Perdue (D) by about 13 points, ending Perdue's 24 years in the office. Secretary of State Mac Warner (R) beat his predecessor, Natalie Tennant (D), and Attorney General Patrick Morrisey (R), Auditor John B. McCuskey (R), and Agriculture Commissioner Kent Leonhardt (R) were also reelected.
• In all, 21 legislative seats changed party, every one of them to Republicans. In one of the closer races, Del. Ed Evans (D) kept his District 26 seat by about 70 votes over Wesley Payne (R). After the election, Del. Jason Barrett (D) of Berkeley County switched to the Republican Party, widening the House majority further.

Legislature

• House of Delegates (100 seats): 41 D, 59 R before the election, 24 D, 76 R after; control stayed with Republicans.
• Senate (34 seats): 14 D, 20 R before the election, 11 D, 23 R after; control stayed with Republicans.
