West Virginia held its general election on November 8, 2022, deciding 134 legislative seats across 117 districts. No chamber changed party control.
Highlights
- Republicans pushed West Virginia Democrats to their smallest legislative minorities in decades, while voters rejected all four constitutional amendments on the ballot.
- The Senate went from 23 Republicans to 30, leaving Democrats with four seats, the smallest Senate minority since 1991. Minority Leader Stephen Baldwin Jr. (D) lost to Vince Deeds (R) in the 10th District, four-term Sen. Ron Stollings (D) lost to former U.S. Attorney Mike Stuart (R) in the 7th, and one-term Sen. Richard Lindsay (D) lost the 8th to former Del. Mark Hunt (R), a Democrat-turned-Republican. Appointed Sen. Hannah Geffert (D) fell to Del. Jason Barrett (R) in the 16th, and Mike Oliverio (R) won the Democratic-held 13th over Del. Barbara Fleischauer (D) by about 150 votes. Minority Whip Mike Woelfel (D) was the only Democratic senator to win, and Republicans now hold more than four-fifths of both chambers, enough to suspend the rule that bills be read on three separate days.
- In the House of Delegates, Republicans grew to 88 of 100 seats, and the Democratic caucus was the smallest either party had held since 1964. Delegates Phil Diserio (D), Lisa Zukoff (D), Ed Evans (D), and Cody Thompson (D) all lost to Republicans; the GOP's only incumbent loss was Del. Austin Haynes (R), who fell to David Pritt (D) in the 50th District.
- All four amendments failed by wide margins. The highest-profile, Amendment 2, would have let lawmakers cut personal property taxes on business inventory, machinery, and vehicles; Gov. Jim Justice opposed it as too costly to the state budget. Voters also rejected Amendment 4 (legislative approval of state school board rules), Amendment 1 (barring courts from intervening in impeachments), and Amendment 3 (allowing churches to incorporate).
Legislature
- House of Delegates (100 seats): 24 D, 76 R before the election, 12 D, 88 R after; control stayed with Republicans.
- Senate (34 seats): 11 D, 23 R before the election, 4 D, 30 R after; control stayed with Republicans.
