Wyoming held its general election on November 3, 2020, deciding 75 legislative seats. No chamber changed party control.
Highlights
- Republicans, who already held two-thirds of both chambers, picked up a seat in each, and the Legislature looked to have shifted further right. Members of a new House Freedom Caucus, though, mostly lost their bids for House leadership posts by 32-18 votes.
- Democrats lost 3 incumbents and an open seat, mostly in Sweetwater County:
- In Senate District 12, Sen. Liisa Anselmi-Dalton (D) of Rock Springs lost to John Kolb (R) by about 700 votes, completing a Republican sweep of the county.
- In House District 39, Marshall Burt (L) unseated 14-year veteran Stan Blake (D) of Green River by about 275 votes, only the fifth time a candidate running solely as a Libertarian had won a state legislative seat.
- In House District 60, which Democrat John Freeman had held since 2011, former Rep. Mark Baker (R) easily beat Lindsey Travis (D).
- In Cheyenne, Rep. Sara Burlingame (D) lost her seat in House District 44 to John Romero-Martinez (R) by fewer than 50 votes.
- The one Democratic gain came in Albany County's House District 14, open after Rep. Dan Furphy left it to run for the Senate: Trey Sherwood (D) captured the Republican-held seat by fewer than 100 votes over Matthew Burkhart (R). Beyond the flips, the tightest finish was House District 55, where Ember Oakley (R) held off Bethany Baldes (L) by about 30 votes, a second near miss for Baldes after a 2018 loss by 53 votes.
- In all, 5 legislative seats changed parties, all but one away from Democrats. Most seats were never in play, with only one candidate on the ballot in 46 races, nearly all of those candidates Republicans.
- Amendment A, which would have lifted the constitutional cap on municipal borrowing for sewer projects, failed even though yes votes outnumbered no votes. A Wyoming amendment needs a majority of all ballots cast in the election, so every ballot left blank on the question counted against it.
