Wyoming 2024 Election Results

November 5, 2024

Wyoming held its general election on November 5, 2024, deciding 77 legislative seats. No chamber changed party control.

Highlights

  • Wyoming's general election was largely a formality: 59 of the 77 legislative races on the ballot drew only one major-party candidate, so most seats were settled when the August primary ended. The Legislature emerged as lopsidedly Republican as it entered, with 1 seat changing parties and 1 incumbent defeated, both in the same race.
  • The night's most consequential shift happened inside the Republican Party itself. The hard-line Wyoming Freedom Caucus, already strengthened by its primary-season wins, picked up at least six House seats in the general election, giving the group and its allies roughly 34 of the chamber's 62 seats and a working House majority for the first time. The caucus used it to take the chamber's leadership, electing Majority Floor Leader Chip Neiman (R) as Speaker for the 2025 session.
  • The one seat that changed hands was the night's other story. In House District 33, which takes in much of the Wind River Reservation, Ivan Posey (D), an Eastern Shoshone educator at Central Wyoming College, unseated Rep. Sarah Penn (R) by sixteen points, reclaiming a seat Democrats lost in 2022 and ensuring the Legislature keeps an Indigenous member now that Sen. Affie Ellis has retired.
  • Voters also approved Constitutional Amendment A with about six in ten votes, splitting residential real property into its own tax class and authorizing the Legislature to create a subclass for owner-occupied homes.

Legislature

  • House (62 seats): 5 D, 57 R before the election, 6 D, 56 R after; control stayed with Republicans.
  • Senate (31 seats): 2 D, 29 R before the election, 2 D, 29 R after; control stayed with Republicans.
