Position Overview
Title: Manager / Director, commensurate with experience
MultiState is seeking an experienced professional to join our growing 50-state Strategic Government Relations (SGR) practice. Our SGR team creates bespoke solutions for our clients. We oversee complex multi-jurisdictional campaigns, pass first-in-the-nation laws, manage field teams in intense environments, develop national communication narratives, and secure unique third party and stakeholder organization partnerships with or on behalf of our clients. Our clients include Fortune 100 corporations, innovative new businesses, national trade associations, and issue coalitions. The selected candidate in this position will serve a critical role in ensuring our clients’ continued success. This position is based in Arlington, VA, at MultiState’s headquarters offices.
As a Strategic Government Relations professional, you will:
Support the firm’s client leads on existing engagements and deliverables.
Direct responsibility for coordinating and executing all aspects of multi-state government relations efforts on specific and varying issues as needed by firm clients. This includes performing research and developing general knowledge of prioritized and diverse public policy issues, management of government and public affairs field teams in various jurisdictions, and other client deliverables as needed.
Advise clients in the development of clear, concise, and persuasive policy arguments to advance their issues.
Analyze legislation and detect emerging issues at the state and local levels while interpreting trends to the benefit of firm clients and their internal stakeholders.
Provide political expertise on activities critical to achieving client objectives, including preparation of clients’ political budgets, stakeholder mapping, and opposition research.
Work with clients to develop materials for lobbying efforts, including hearing testimony and comment letters, as well as write content for grassroots and digital campaigns.
Assist with the management of national policymaker and third party organizational relationships under MultiState’s Stakeholder Engagement practice. Represent and support clients onsite at national events and conferences.
Collaborate with client leads on new business proposals utilizing strong writing skills and contribute creative ideas and tactics to prospective engagements and campaigns.
Assist in maintaining and expanding a significant network of state advocacy firms in all states and be able to expertly identify resources and assets to enhance multi-state campaigns for clients.
Identify and secure new business development opportunities across all of MultiState’s service lines including consulting, association management, issue management, lobbying compliance, and research services.
To be successful, you will:

Have experience building and executing multi-jurisdictional or national issue campaigns;

Organizational agility
We prefer that you have:
Bachelor’s degree, preferably in political science, public affairs, or a related field.
A minimum of five years’ relevant work experience in a similar advocacy position for a company, trade association, or a government relations firm or equivalent experience working on policy and process in a state legislature, for a governor, or an active public-facing regulatory body.
Excellent writing skills.
Interpersonal skills with a high level of integrity.
Proven presentation and public speaking experience.
The ability to juggle multiple projects at once and deliver under tight deadlines.
Demonstrated familiarity with the political and media landscape.
