”Make America Healthy Again” proponents seek to reduce chronic disease rates, especially among children, and improve the overall health of Americans by focusing on prevention and addressing the “root causes” of health issues. This involves reevaluating the current healthcare system and promoting healthy lifestyles.

Make America Healthy Again (“MAHA”) was launched by the Trump Administration through Executive Order 14212, entitled “Establishing the President’s Make America Healthy Again Commission,” to create a federal board, chaired by the Secretary of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., to tackle the chronic disease public health crisis in the United States by aligning medical, nutritional, agricultural, educational, and environmental policies. The Order also directs the Commission to conduct a Make our Children Healthy Again: Assessment, which was published on May 22, 2025.

State MAHA Activity

With Make America Healthy Again a fixture of President Trump's second term in office, the states have rapidly adopted pieces of the MAHA agenda. Beginning next year, the joint federal-state Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (“SNAP”) benefits will not apply to  products deemed “unhealthy” in Arkansas, Idaho, Iowa, Indiana, Nebraska and Utah with a slew of other states considering the legislation. At least five states have established study commissions or special committees to examine the chronic disease public health crisis in their respective states by aligning medical, nutritional, agricultural, educational, and environmental policies.
