2022 Gubernatorial Partisan Control
- Only two governors were up for election in 2021 — in New Jersey and Virginia. While New Jersey Democratic Governor Phil Murphy was able to hold onto his seat in a narrow victory, Virginia’s governorship flipped from Democratic to Republican with a win by Glenn Youngkin.
- Overall, Republicans have gained one gubernatorial seat after the 2021 elections by flipping the open seat in Virginia. In 2022, Republicans will have 28 governors and Democrats will have 22 governors.
