Brian Peterson
Director, Strategic Government Relations
Brian Peterson serves as Director, Strategic Government Relations, and joined MultiState in April 2026. Leveraging his many years of government affairs experience, he helps clients expertly navigate the complex political and policymaking landscapes of state capitols.
Prior to MultiState, Brian was the Associate Director for State Government Relations at FINRA, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. While at FINRA, he advocated for policies across all 50 states to protect investors and ensure the integrity of the country’s vibrant capital markets. Before FINRA, he spent 11 years with The Pew Charitable Trusts where he led advocacy campaigns to advance evidence-based policies and reforms nationwide on numerous issues. While at Pew, he managed institutional partnerships with organizations such as the National Conference of State Legislatures, Western Governors’ Association, National Association of Counties, and Council of State Governments (CSG).
Brian is a recognized leader in the state government relations industry. He has been a member of the Washington Area State Relations Group Board of Directors since January 2022 and was Programming Committee Chair in 2025. From 2023 to 2024, he sat on the CSG Advisory Associates Committee.
Brian first began his career in state government affairs in Idaho, where he worked as a Legislative Leadership Assistant in the Senate. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Economy from the College of Idaho. Brian resides in Glenn Dale, Maryland, with his husband and two dogs, where he can often be found in the kitchen or at the grill trying a new recipe.
