Key Takeaways:

  • June is a lighter month for lobbying compliance deadlines, with disclosure reports due in 23 states, 8 localities, and Canada Federal. Florida and Louisiana stand out as states where you may need to file more than one report depending on which branch or level of government you are registered in.
  • If you lobby any locality in New York, you are required to register with the state and file bi-monthly disclosure reports with COELIG, even if you have no state-level lobbying activity. Missing this requirement can result in hefty fines.
  • In June, campaign finance filing deadlines apply in 25 states, Washington DC, and at the federal level. Political committees should also watch for contribution- or expenditure-triggered reporting requirements, which can apply outside of a standard filing schedule.
  • If you are active in multiple jurisdictions, lobbying at conferences and other out-of-state events can trigger state lobbying disclosure reports you might not expect. Reviewing your full footprint before deadlines hit is always a good idea.

Understanding Filing Schedules and Contribution-Triggered Deadlines

Political committees should be aware of their filing schedules. Some jurisdictions (Texas, for example) give the option to report monthly or quarterly. Also, be aware that some states require a political committee to report large contributions within a set time frame of receipt. Political committees should review contributions carefully to ensure they do not miss a required contribution- or expenditure-triggered deadline.
